Quest for Identity
Blog's Classical Music Piece: Beethoven Symphony Number 9
The classical music piece for this blog is Beethoven Symphony 9. I chose this piece because it deals with Beethoven's finding his Identity after becoming deaf. In the beginning, the piece shows Beethoven's struggle as a musician who can't hear his music. Still, it slowly evolves into Beethoven discovering a new meaning to his life and achieving pure elation.

Who are we? There are many interpretations and answers to this question. Are we a collection of atoms created from the vastness of space? Are we a combination of all our past experiences? Are we beings made in the image of God? Or are we a mixture of all these, simply finding our way through the world?
The quest for Identity has been a driving quest for humanity throughout the ages. Investigating our Identity is why we study history, anthropology, and paleontology to discover who we once were as a society. Investigating our Identity is also why we send rockets into interstellar space to see what we will be and if anyone is like us.
The quest for personal Identity is not as straightforward as looking toward the past or the future; it is about finding your place in the world. While that might sound simple, it is a lifelong endeavor to find out how you are supposed to interact with other people and how you want people to interact with you.
An example of a personal quest for identity is in Piranesi. Piranesi goes on his own quest for Identity though it was not intentional. At the beginning of the book, Piranesi is quite content with his day-to-day life, never delving into the nature of the house, just exploring it at his own whim. But as the Other and Prophet reveal more information to him, he is thrust into a quest for Identity where his own memories can't be trusted or relied upon.
Discovering one's Identity is never a painless, easy process, but it is vital to personal fulfillment.
