Minecraft is Art

 

I watched a video that said, "Art is externalizing what is internal," and I wholeheartedly agree.

This is Art

Today, I will be talking about one of my favorite pieces of art that people don't really consider a piece of art.. Minecraft. 









While I usually consider video games art, I consider Minecraft to be more of a canvas and a standalone piece of art. Instead of having an experience hand-crafted for you like most other games, Minecraft is a blank canvas for you to draw on.


I will explain this using one of the best art forms as a reference, the culinary arts. Other games like Mario cook a 5-course meal for you to enjoy over a 20+ hour time, Minecraft gives you a bunch of ingredients and makes you cook your own game. The Mario type of meals are super great to eat, but they don't allow for the kind of freedom that comes with having all the ingredients to cook your own Minecraft meal. If Nintendo feeds you a chocolate cake but you don't like it, you will be left thinking "man, I just wasted 70 dollars on something that tastes bad", but if Minecraft serves you a Lava chicken. Still, you don't like It you can be like "man i hate lava chicken lemme make some steak" and then you are eating steak.


That bad analogy aside, I truly believe that Minecraft is the best piece of art created in recent times, because it leads to so many forms of expression. If you are a fan of making your own buildings or monstrosities, Minecraft allows you to do that, if you are a fan of messing with the mechanics of the game through mods, Minecraft allows you to do that, if you want to act out story lines with your friends Minecraft allows you to do that. There is simply no end to the amount of creative expression that this game allows for, and that's why it is not only a form of art but also the canvas for more art to be created.



Some older folks may not consider video games to be art, but tying back to how I defined art at the beginning of the blog, video games are just another way of externalizing what is internal. Painters like Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa, Composers like Beethoven composed symphonies and concertos, and game developers developed their own form of art.
